In Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and other metropolitan areas with high housing prices, the proportion of people who think that housing prices are unaffordable has reached or exceeded 90%.
According to a poll conducted by EKOS Research in June, two out of every five citizens across Canada find housing prices unaffordable. People hold this view across all income groups.
About half of those who think they belong to the “poor or working class” believe that housing prices in the areas where they live are beyond their affordability. Among those who thought they were in the “middle class” or “upper class”, 38% and 37% respectively held the same view.
Geographically, people living in metropolitan areas with high housing prices feel more strongly about it. In Vancouver, only 2% of respondents thought local housing prices were “affordable.” In Calgary and Montreal, 11 per cent and 22 per cent of respondents thought local house prices were affordable. In Toronto, only 6% of respondents thought local house prices were affordable.
EKOS Research Public opinion Company interviewed 5658 people by telephone from June 1 to 19 this year. The positive and negative error rate of the above survey results is 1.3%. Frank Graves, president of the company, said the survey results show that in some parts of Canada, the problem of unaffordable housing prices has reached a crisis level in different regions and different social classes. The discovery is disturbing.
