After months of discussion, the two levels of government finally signed a preliminary transport cooperation agreement between the two sides yesterday, which is also the starting point for more agreements between provincial and municipal governments in the future, and the beginning of the implementation of railway transport development between the two sides.
The agreement marks the imminent start of the entire railway development plan for Ontario and Greater Toronto, and the provincial government has pledged 30 billion yuan for railway development, which can be put in place in the next 20 years.
The development of the agreement includes four major Ontario transport development plans, the Ontario Railway Line, Line 2 under the Smart Railway Project, the extension of three additional subway stations at the Scarborough Shopping Mall, the northward extension of the Yonge Street subway line and the Ellington West Crossing extension.
In addition, it also includes funding for the upgrading and maintenance of the subway and bus systems under the multi-city bus bureau to tie in with the new railway development, the Bruya-Yonghe Street passenger capacity increase project, and the GO Railway and Smart track project for the renewal and construction of subway stations.
This cooperation agreement between the provinces and cities may not necessarily make all the residents of many cities happy, because when considering the cooperation plan, the municipal government can only temporarily sacrifice the multi-city centre relief line plan in exchange for the provincial government’s support for other railway strategies such as the development of smart railways, or disappoint subway passengers living near the city center.
Mayor Zhuangdeli said frankly that the railway development of the city of Toronto has lagged behind people in the past few decades, and the signing of a preliminary agreement on funding and development with the provincial government on this issue yesterday is undoubtedly a breakthrough step, and at the same time shows that the city government and the provincial government have sincerity and confidence in implementing the development of the railway transport system.
He said that the signing of the agreement represents not only infrastructure development, but also, more importantly, the benefits of the entire transport plan to the economic development of the Greater Toronto area.
