‘There are a lot of insects and rats in the building, ‘said Yasmin Douale, a resident at Eglinton Avenue East 3161. At a point, the tenants had to throw away their furniture and sundries. “We have to throw away the furniture all the time because of bed lice,” Duale told CTV News. “there is a hole that enters the apartment from the public area, where cockroaches come in and bed lice come out of the tiles,” she said. ”
She also complained that the apartment did not have reliable water and electricity services. “there is no water in the apartment and there is almost no water flowing out of our sink,” she said. ” She added that a fallen tree was now blocking the tenant’s driveway and had not been moved since May. “the management of this estate has been neglected in many places,” she added.
In February 2021, Douale went to the Ontario landlords and tenants Committee (Ontario Landlord-Tenant Board,LTB) to hear the conditions of the apartment. Explaining the outcome of the hearing, she said: “they decided that the tenant would hand over the key to the management so that the apartment could be repaired and ordered the landlord to take reasonable measures to solve the problem.” At that meeting, Duale said her landlord also agreed to deal with rodent infestation by February 24, 2021.
But the situation has not improved since then, Toronto CTV News repeatedly contacted the property management company Best Rank Investments to comment on the incident, but they did not respond.
Duale said that this spring, the management office told her to find an exterminator, but she said that when she did so, she asked for live samples of insects during the examination, but she did not. “We don’t keep dead insects,” she said. “it’s not sanitary. When we see a bug, we will kill it immediately. ”
The pest problem has not improved, so Duale decided to petition with his neighbors. “I myself and another tenant took the initiative to make this petition,” she said. I told them that it was time for us to unite and defend our rights as paying tenants. ” At present, they have collected the signatures of 35 tenants in the building.
On 30 May, however, Douale received an eviction notice. The notice claimed that there was a complaint against Duale, but she said she had talked to neighbors, and they all claimed that they had not reported her. And she was not told what the nature of the complaint was.
