It is pointed out that the housing policy proposed by the federal government and the Vancouver municipal government simply cannot solve the problem that people are forced to relocate and cannot afford to live in Vancouver. During the protest, many ethnic Chinese residents held up signs to express their opposition to the developer’s plan to build expensive apartments in Chinatown.

Kell Gerlings of the Wenshi tenants Union points out that even though the federal government has announced a 10-year housing policy, the funds promised so far have not been used for the social housing programs that tenants need. She said that the purpose of joining the residents’ protest was to express that the government was not doing enough.

Sarah Sagaii said that whether the federal government or the Vancouver government, they do not consider the real needs of Vancouver tenants, which makes spontaneous protests by tenants and citizens all the more important. She said the Vancouver city government has finally made progress in providing temporary composite housing. However, she said that these temporary composite housing estates are only transitional measures, and what these homeless people ultimately need is a permanent housing unit.

Protest sponsor Stephanie Fung pointed out that the C $11.2 billion provided by the federal government to Canadian provinces will be used to provide “loans” for social housing, which has been greatly reduced because it is allocated over 11 years.

Vince Tao says the federal government must allocate annual funds to solve the problem of homelessness in British Columbia, especially in Vancouver, where the problem is the worst. He suggested that the Government must provide funding for the construction of community-managed housing units for welfare or pension recipients.

Many elderly people in Chinatown joined the demonstration. An old man surnamed Tan pointed out that the construction of expensive apartments in Chinatown has made many elderly people face relocation. She said the federal government should help acquire land at 105Qihua Street (Keefer Street) in Chinatown to build social housing units and stop developers from building expensive high-rise buildings here.
