If you’ve passed through downtown Toronto lately, you might not realize there’s a massive cave-like space taking shape deep beneath the city. What looks like a colossal underground cavern is actually the future Corktown Station, a major stop along the forthcoming Ontario Line, set to reshape transit across Toronto.
What’s with the Huge Underground Cave?
This massive “cave” isn’t natural — it’s the result of Metrolinx tunneling efforts for Corktown Station, located near King Street East and Berkeley Street. The vast opening is a launch shaft for tunnel boring machines that will help carve out new subway routes. Once construction wraps up, this cavern will become a fully functional, modern transit hub, complete with platforms, escalators, and entrances that connect to King, Berkeley, and Front Streets.
Why Corktown Station Matters
Corktown is one of 15 new stations being built for the Ontario Line. It’s designed to help reduce the strain on Toronto’s overburdened Line 1 Yonge–University and make east–west travel through downtown faster and more efficient. When complete, Corktown will offer commuters a direct, speedy link through the core of the city — something that’s been missing from Toronto’s transit landscape for decades.
What Commuters Can Expect
Once the Ontario Line is fully operational — expected sometime in the early 2030s — commuters will benefit from:
