Toronto’s Parkdale Neighborhood’s New Affordable Housing Building

Toronto’s Parkdale neighborhood might be getting a new addition in the form of a brand new affordable infill. A number of new constructions have been announced for Parkdale, and the latest addition to the list of proposed developments is a 10-story affordable rental development that is expected to ease the housing issues.

The construction of this affordable rental building has been proposed by Parkdale United Church Foundation (PUCF). The organization also plans to operate the housing program. The space that the building will occupy means the integration of 92 additional units. As per the application submitted to the city, the affordable housing development is planned for 1337, 1339, and 1355 King Street West.

The 10-storey infill will cover a total of 5,500 square meters of residential GFA including eight vehicle parking spaces with two accessible spaces. A total of 228 units will be available.

Proposal Approved By Toronto City Council

The organization has highlighted in the application that the development is “carefully designed to harmonize with the existing and emerging urban fabric of South Parkdale, respecting the existing built context while allowing for changing housing needs to be met.”

The development aligns with the City’s Open Doors affordable housing initiative and the broader HousingTO 2020-2030 Action Plan. As a result, the proposal has already got the approval of the Toronto City Council.

Good News For Parkdale Residents

Parkdale has undergone significant development over the last couple of decades. Numerous condo developments took place in the neighborhood, and the trend doesn’t seem to stop anytime soon. However, despite the construction of such buildings, the housing issue remains as stark as ever since the condos aren’t affordable for many.

The construction of the affordable housing buildings is sure to come as happy news for the Parkdale residents who have been struggling to find a nice, affordable place to live.
