Experts say we expect this trend to continue into this year.
Canadians are expected to pay more for food by 2022.
That’s according to the 2022 food price report, compiled by researchers at Dalhousie University, University of Guelph, University of Saskatchewan and University of British Columbia.
The report, released in early December, expects overall food prices in Canada to rise by 5% to 7% in 2022.
Prices of bakery products are expected to rise by 5% to 7%.
Dairy prices are expected to rise by 5% to 7%.
Vegetable prices are expected to rise by 5% to 7%.
Fruit prices are expected to rise by 3% to 5%.
Meat and seafood prices are expected to rise by 2%.
The cost of eating out will also increase, and restaurant prices are expected to rise by 6% to 8%.
Food prices will also vary across the country. Food price increases in Ontario, BC, Alberta, Newfoundland, Labrador and Saskatchewan are all expected to be above average, according to the report.
Meanwhile, food price increases in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec will all be below average.
The report’s authors say food insecurity will “become a major problem for Canada to cope with rising prices in 2022.”
