Under the catastrophic impact of the COVID-19 epidemic and the collapse in oil prices, Li Ka-shing decided to sell Husky Energy, a veteran Canadian oil company with a history of more than 80 years. Heskey, the starting point for the Li Ka-shing family to build an overseas energy map, was once the most profitable “cash cow”, but oil companies have been hit hard by weak demand and the global economy during the epidemic, and Heskey’s share price has fallen 70 per cent since the start of the year. Cenovus Energy, a Canadian oil sands producer, and Husky Energy agreed to merge on an all-stock basis on Oct. 25, local time. The combined company will be Cenovus Energy Inc. It is still headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The total value of the acquisition, including debt, is C $23.6 billion. Cenovus’s life is not much better under the pressure of oil prices, with its shares down more than 60 per cent so far this year. The company bought oil sands assets of ConocoPhillips in 2017 and was saddled with heavy debt, a risk that magnified sharply as Canadian heavy oil prices plummeted. The deal will create Canada’s third-largest oil and gas producer and Canada’s second-largest refiner.
